Christian Diver Spotlight: Michael Murden | Moorea, French Polynesia

Of all the places I’ve had the opportunity to minister (& dive), Moorea has got to be the most beautiful! The island itself (just a 45 min. ferry‘s ride from Tahiti), at every turn, has SO many beautiful sights to see, and can be circled in half a day, if you didn’t make the sightseeing stops. And beneath this lush island paradise (known for mountain scenes in movie Bali Hai) is some unbelievably clear vis! We HAD to had 200+ vis on a couple dives! So clear, you almost forgot you were under water!

Beneath some of these mangrove-covered limestone formed islands are caverns, such as the popular Chandelier Caves. Diving this 4-room system is a real treat as long as no one stirs it up!! Each room has access to air pockets in the roof to inspect the beautiful ceiling formations and better communicate everyone's comfort level & mid-dive plan. With the caves' entry being at 10' depth, it makes for a nice prelude to any future pursuits of cave diving.

Still located in a jungle clearing where men of the 1st Platoon Co. A 710 TK were killed 18 Oct., 1944, after hitting a land mine. Having saved two Navy airmen, the tank, upon returning to fire into Jap held caves, was hit.

IN MEMORY: T/4 Otto Hesselbarth, Cpl. Michael Valentino, PFC George Lopes, PFC Howard Dahms. Capt H. W. Jones of 1st Marine Division was also killed.
